Which debt should you pay first?

Put in everything you owe, Fuliza, M-Shwari, a loan app, a bank or SACCO loan, and what you can pay each month. See the order to clear them, when you are debt-free, and what the charges cost you on the way.

What you owe

  1. Debt 1

Safaricom's daily fee for your balance band, for 30 days (checked 15 Oct 2026). The one-off 1% access fee is left out.

  2. Debt 2

9% for 30 days, as NCBA Bank with Safaricom publishes it (read 5 Oct 2026).

  3. Debt 3

14.40% a year, the banks' average lending rate in September 2026 (CBK). For your own rate, pick "Other loan, % a year".

The minimums add up to KES 3,000. This month the charges alone come to about KES 1,770.

Paying only the minimums, a debt with no set payment, like Fuliza, never ends. Your plan ends it in 11 months.

A guide, not a statement: lenders add late fees and roll-over charges that are not counted here, and a mobile loan or Fuliza balance usually has to be cleared within 30 days. Your loan agreement decides what you owe.

Quick answers

Questions people ask

Which debt should I pay off first?
On cost alone, the one whose charges are the biggest share of what you owe: pay the minimums on everything, then put every spare shilling on that one. Small Fuliza and mobile-loan balances usually come first, because their fees are a large share of a small amount. Paying the smallest balance first costs a little more but clears a debt sooner; the planner shows both.
How much does Fuliza cost if I carry it for a month?
At Safaricom's published daily fees, a KES 2,000 balance carried for 30 days costs about KES 720, 36% of the balance, before the 1% access fee.
Is it better to borrow from a bank or SACCO to clear mobile loans?
It can cost less, because a bank or SACCO loan's yearly rate is usually far below what a mobile loan costs for a month. Compare the two with the loan true-cost calculator first, and count the new loan's fees. This is information, not advice: your own circumstances decide.
